BBBS Sandi and Xander  Corrine Rillera

This was the first full year that the Bigs (from PHS) and the Littles (from DN) were able to complete their work together as mentors and their buddies!  This project was introduced at an an opening day for our teachers and staff, when high school teacher, Sandi Schaeffer became interested in starting this effort at Palisades!  Unfortunately, COVID got in the way, but it did not derail Sandi's ambition!  She enlisted the support of Mrs. Collie, Durham's principal, as well as Mr. Heffernan and Mrs. Schlosser at the high school to make it happen!  15 littles were paired up with their high school (trained) mentor and the magic worked!

Last week, junior, Xander Riexinger, and Mrs. Sandi Shaffer (pictured left) were recognized at the Big Brothers Big Sisters end of year celebration!  Xander was named as the School Based High School BIG of the Year, while Sandi was named as the School Based Liaison of the Year.

Special thanks to Mrs. Corrine Rillera (pictured right), the secretary at Durham Nockamixon, who organized the meetings for the bigs and the littles and was also named School Liaison of Year!

We are so proud of these individuals and their commitment to students!  And to receive this honor right out of the gate is phenomenal!  Thanks for your efforts and keeping the ball rolling!

Brick Pathway PALMS1  Restored Bench PALMS
PALMS Garden Club  PALMS Garden Party

Congratulations to the Palisades Middle School Garden Club for completing phase one of the new American colonial garden. This year the garden club set goals to revitalize the school garden by adding a cedar garden bed, a brick pathway, and to restore the old wood/metal bench.  As of June 6, 2023, the garden club has met all of these goals by using their occupational skills to get the job done. During this project the students demonstrated skills in leadership, collaboration, flexibility, time management, dedication, and perseverance. Looking forward to phase two of the garden project, students are planning to start landscaping and to create a certified Monarch Butterfly Waystation for the 2023-2023 school year. Special thanks to Rylan Tharp and his father Mr. Tharp for volunteering to restore the old bench. During our garden party on Tuesday night, Ryland’s family delivered the beautifully restored bench to the garden. In addition, the garden was also given a grant from the Palisades Community Foundation to make this garden project possible.
