URGENT SAFETY ALERT FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS: Concerning TikTok Trend Impacting School Devices

From Our School Device Coverage Provider,

We’re reaching out with an important safety alert regarding a disturbing and dangerous trend that surfaced on TikTok and has already impacted multiple school campuses across the country.

We were made aware that some students (across the nation) are intentionally inserting pieces of mechanical pencil lead into the USB-C or power ports of Chromebooks. This reckless act can cause the devices to short-circuit, overheat, and in some cases, ignite—posing a serious risk of fire, property damage, and injury.

We strongly recommend that IT staff and administrators remain vigilant, inform faculty, and consider issuing a district-wide warning to students and parents. If your district has seen unusual Chromebook malfunctions or damage, it may be related to this behavior.

NOTE:  This notice has been sent out to all of our administrators, teachers and staff.  Please be aware of this alarming and possibly dangerous trend.  Thank you for your attention.

Four winners from across the state were chosen to receive a cash award of $500, and coverage of their winning entry in the Association’s monthly magazine, the Pennsylvania Township News, and in their local newspapers.

Purpose: To recognize youth groups that make valuable and lasting contributions to improve life in Pennsylvania’s townships of the second class. The awards program encourages greater youth involvement in township government.
