District Administration names 45 ‘Districts of Distinction’

Innovative districts nationwide honored in DA’s annual award program

Trumbull, Conn.[July 1, 2018] — In its July edition, District Administration magazine honors 45 school districts as Districts of Distinction. This is the eighth round of honorees for this national recognition program, which began in November 2014.

Districts of Distinction was established by District Administration to honor school districts that are leading the way with new ideas that solve challenges. Honorees are selected based on the quantifiable results and replicability of their initiatives. The July 2018 Districts of Distinction honorees were selected by the magazine’s editors from numerous nominations.

The 45 school systems from 26 states honored in this round have launched programs that range from partnering with outside organizations for career training to improving mental health for students to growing food to nourish the local community.

For example, Sumter County School District has partnered with the Florida Department of Education and CareerSource Florida to operate 17 career and technical education programs, many of which result in nationally recognized industry credentials. In New York’s Hamburg Central School District, all district employees are trained to recognize risk factors and warning signs of mental illness in students, and how to apply five-step action plans. And on remote Prince of Wales Island in Alaska, students in the Southeast Island School District learn how to manage aquaponic greenhouses and grow produce that feeds them and their families.

“These districts all have developed exemplary programs to support students in their education and well beyond the classroom,” says JD Solomon, editorial director at District Administration magazine. “We hope our readers are inspired by the innovation of these honorees to create successful initiatives in their own districts.”
