There's been a lot of discussion in the media about a non-profit organization, The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), filing a complaint with the FTC regarding Google's student data privacy policies and practices. You can see an article at the link below that goes in to a bit more detail regarding these allegations.

Below is Google's response to these allegations as well as a webinar video recording that outlines the lengths that Google goes through to protect the very data that the EFF is accusing them of using for their own purposes.

In my opinion this is just a lot of media hype as Google has had the reputation in the past of targeting advertising to students based on their browsing history. Google has since put privacy policies in place specifically for Google Apps for Education which comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and has also signed The Future of Privacy Forum and The Software & Information Industry Association's Student Privacy Pledge along with over 200 other companies that provide software for the education sector. See the link below regarding the Student Privacy Pledge. I firmly believe that Google is committed to student data privacy but I wanted to send this out to everyone so you could formulate your own opinion before the media continues to spew their slanted view of the facts.
